Southern Charm fans dragged Shep Rose over the coals recently after he uploaded a damning video to Instagram. The video depicted Rose mocking a homeless woman who had clearly been collecting cans. After receiving a vitriolic response from fans, Rose fought back by telling them at simply unfollow him.

Now, Rose has deactivated his Twitter account among the controversy. According to his castmate Eliza Limehouse, he’s learning a valuable lesson.

The Southern Charm star uploaded an embarrassing video to Instagram in which he accosted a homeless person on the street. In the video, it’s clear that the person had been collecting cans, as they had several large bags of cans stacked up nearby.

In the video, the woman sits on the sidewalk clearly irritated and trying to hide her face from the camera. Meanwhile, Shep Rose tells her she has “nice cans” in what was, let’s face it, a pretty thoughtless attempt at a pun.

“Look at me. Nice cans! I mean, the cans you have!” Rose exclaimed to the homeless woman as she covers her face and yells, “No!”

“I love double entendres. Yes she was camera shy. But she laughed,” Rose captioned the video.

It’s certainly a pretty low move to accost someone on the street who clearly doesn’t want the attention — even worse when they joke you’re trying to make highlights the fact that they’re a person clearly in need.

Rose tells fans to unfollow him

Naturally, Rose wound up facing some pretty angry fans once he uploaded the video. Many were quick to point out how inappropriate the video was.

One fan tagged Southern Charm star Patricia Altschul as well as Andy Cohen in a tweet and wrote, “Is this Southern Charm? I can understand being drunk & feeling regret but @ShepRose feels none this morning. Cheap way to get “laughs” from followers but there is nothing funny about homelessness. I’m DONE w/ him.”

Another user wrote, “Used to think you were funny… Till the can incident. Your so awesome, why stoop to that level for jokes? [You’re] so much better than that. You don’t need to be funny at other peoples expense. Don’t like what I’m saying? Going to tell me to keep scrolling, don’t follow blah blah blah? Just think about it. People really like you, but you’re losing fans fast.”

In response to the tweet targeted at Patricia Altschul and Andy Cohen, Rose wrote, “Omg. I offended you! Ok. Here’s the plan, sensitivity training 5 times a week. Then intensive therapy (hot yoga?) followed by a public flogging in the town square. Then i move to Siberia and live in an igloo for 4 months. At this point. I think I’ll be cleansed of your disapproval.”

On a separate Twitter thread, he wrote, “Unfollow then. No big deal.”

Is Rose learning a lesson?

After a blistering storm of fan reactions, it seems the Southern Charm star might be learning a lesson from the entire experience. Eliza Limehouse thinks so at least.

The Southern Charm star told PeopleTV, “I think Shep doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, but he sometimes comes across and does things that he shouldn’t, just because he’s so open. And he’s always trying to make a joke out of something, and some things just aren’t funny.

She added, “I think that he’s understanding that more and more.”

Rose made an apology as well, writing on Twitter, “I know some people were upset about the video from Sunday night. It was a stupid joke and bad idea all around. Also a bit out of context. I spent a few minutes with her talking and telling jokes. She laughed a little. But yeah, wasn’t cool or funny. Mea culpa.”

Before deactivating his Twitter account, he also wrote, “I feel absolutely sick about all that’s transpired this week. I’ve compounded stupidity upon stupidity. Just know that I never intended to hurt anyone. And I do enjoy sharing my adventures and thoughts with you. But I blew it. Anyway, gonna take a little break. And look inward.”
